New data from Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that, in the three months to June, the number of terabytes downloaded on mobile devices was up 43% from it's previous survey in Dec 2012.

“Download volumes for mobile handsets have really seen explosive growth," the ABS's Lesley Martin said.

Foad Fadaghi, a senior analyst at research firm Telsyte, said the significant increase was likely fuelled by the introduction of 4G mobile networks, which offer faster speeds and encourage more downloads than 3G networks.

"People have started using mobile apps for many of the things they used to do on computers," he said.

The growth in mobile usage highlights the importance for businesses to have a mobile strategy.
