It's time to get serious about FUN!

Let us join the dots for you...

Over the past 12 months, one of the biggest casualties in the workplace has been fun. We are all having less social interaction, are under more pressure to perform and are living with an uncertain future. We all know there could be another lockdown at any time. It's just not fun.

In the short term, most of us can get through something like this, but this has been a year now. The cracks are starting to show.

With working from home and social distancing policies in place, we are also depending on technology more. Meetings are now video calls, workshops are now eLearning and for customers, they get to order online or through the app.

When there is human interaction, there is usually some fun, a few smiles, some appreciation. A lot of that gets lost when technology is used in business. Even on video calls, there is less chit chat, fewer jokes and it's harder to read the mood in the room.

Businesses tend to focus on functionality when they make business software. Functionality is obviously important. The software needs to function as it should, but there generally isn't much consideration of fun.

Which is ironic, as it is technology so many of us turn to for fun when we're not working (or should be working, who knows what everyone is doing at home). We play games, we watch entertaining videos, we interact socially on social media.

So we know technology can be fun. Why don’t businesses make their technology fun?

It's a matter of priorities.

The importance of fun in learning was something John Cleese recognised over 50 years. This is a clip from one of his training videos from the 1970s. It could maybe do with a zoom update now :)
